Abstract:

Contains five letters from Charles W. Nyström to family members. Three letters are addressed to his aunt (10 pages) and two are addressed to his sister, Emilie (8 pages). Details include lumber prices in 1854, "Cable Comet" celebrations in 1858, the Civil War in California, smallpox vaccination, Native American uprisings, Vigilance Committee activities in 1856, the telegraph, and descriptions of San Francisco. One of the letters to his aunt, dated July 4, 1856, contains an account of Nyström's experience as a member of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee following the stabbing of a member of the Vigilance police by David S. Terry.
